AI Slop: Recognizing Low-Quality AI Content

Merriam-Webster named "slop" their 2025 Word of the Year - defined as "digital content of low quality that is produced usually in quantity by means of artificial intelligence." When a dictionary elevates a word specifically to describe AI-generated junk, you know the problem has gone mainstream.

I've been thinking about this a lot because I use AI daily for writing and coding. The more I use it, the more I notice when output feels... off. Generic. Like it's filling space rather than saying something.


What I've Learned to Recognise

After months of working with LLMs, I've started spotting patterns in low-quality AI output:

Phrases That Signal Generic Output

Inflated openings that add nothing:

  • "It is important to note that..."
  • "In an ever-evolving landscape..."
  • "Let's delve into..."

Overused intensifiers:

  • "Revolutionary," "game-changing," "transformative"
  • Words working harder than the content behind them

Formulaic constructions:

  • "Not only... but also..."
  • "This comprehensive guide will..."

None of these are wrong individually. But when they cluster together, they signal something was optimised for sounding good rather than being good.

Content Problems I Notice

Padding: Multiple paragraphs where one sentence would suffice. Length without insight.

Surface-level responses: Answers that address your question technically but miss what you actually need.

Confident vagueness: The response sounds authoritative but doesn't commit to anything specific.


Why I Think This Happens

My understanding, based on how these systems work:

Token-by-token generation: LLMs predict statistically likely next words. This can default to common, "safe" completions rather than specific ones.

Training data patterns: If certain phrases were overrepresented in training data, models reproduce them frequently. The result: output that sounds like everything else on the internet.

Reward optimisation effects: During fine-tuning, models learn what gets rated highly. If reviewers preferred responses that sound organised and thorough, models optimise for that style - sometimes at the expense of conciseness.


Why This Matters to Me

I use AI as a thinking partner, not a content factory. But if I'm not careful, I end up with output that:

  • Looks polished but says nothing
  • Adds length without adding value
  • Requires more editing than it's worth

The bigger issue: as more content gets AI-generated, finding genuinely useful information becomes harder. Signal-to-noise gets worse.


How I've Adapted My Workflow

Here's what actually works for me:

I prompt for specificity: Instead of "explain X," I ask "explain X to someone who already knows Y, focusing only on Z."

I request brevity explicitly: "Be concise. No preamble. Skip pleasantries." This cuts filler dramatically.

I provide examples: LLMs pattern-match. Showing the style I want anchors output away from generic defaults.

I iterate aggressively: First drafts are starting points. I push back on vague responses and demand concrete details.

I edit everything: AI output is raw material. I cut inflated language, verify claims, and add my own perspective.


My Take

AI slop is a symptom of how these systems are built - optimising for patterns that look helpful rather than content that is helpful.

The tools aren't the problem. Uncritical usage is.

The more I work with LLMs, the more I value specificity over volume, brevity over comprehensiveness, and my own judgment over default outputs.

The goal isn't to avoid AI tools. It's to use them well enough that what comes out doesn't look like everyone else's generic output.
